The Roots of War and the Path to Peace

by | May 8, 2024 | Politics & Liberty

You’ve heard gruesome reports—and likely seen horrifying pictures and videos—of the wars between Gaza and Israel, and Russia and Ukraine.

These wars have caused misery, death, and destruction that is hard to fathom—as have all wars. War is Hell.

Why do people and states go to war—what are its causes? And what ideas must people and governments understand and embrace in order to live in peace?

At LevelUp 2024 (Atlanta, June 19–22), Kiyah Willis will address these and related questions. She’ll focus on what she sees as the central causes of war: collectivism, the idea that the individual’s life belongs not to him but to the group or society—and its deeper corollary, mysticism, any claim to a non-sensory, non-rational means of knowledge (e.g., religious faith, group consensus, or a “race-soul”).

The way to end and avoid war, Kiyah will argue, is for people and governments to embrace the opposites of collectivism and mysticism—namely: individualism, the idea that the individual’s life belongs to him and that he has an inalienable right to live it as he sees fit, free from coercion by other individuals, groups, or governments—and reason: the faculty by means of which we gain and validate knowledge via perceptual observation, conceptual integration, and the laws of logic.
