In discussing productivity on page 301 of OPAR Peikoff says “..one cannot substitute recreation – games, sports, travel, hobbies, reading murder mysteries, watching TV, going shopping, going to the beach, and the like – for work.” So what about retirement? I ended my career (in financial services) over 10 years ago when I knew my wife and I were financially secure and no longer needed to earn income. Since then my activities have consisted of enjoying my relationships with my wife, children, grandchildren and friends, maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle and resuming my early interests in history and philosophy (such as through taking this course). These are purposeful and highly enjoyable but would they count as “productive” as Peikoff defines it?
